Tom Brookes' Bond Things

posted @6:19 p.m. by Richard Kelly

Tom's fine list offers some sterling views on the trademark action elements of the canon. Also some glancingly controversial ones in the Girls and Songs departments...

Tom's List:

1. Bun-gee jump (Goldeneye):
Nothing like a proper stunt, rather than CGI trickery. What a great opening moment and way to welcome Bond back to the world in the 90s.

2. Bike chase (Tomorrow Never Dies):
Beginning with the leap down the side of the skyscraper, for my money this is hands down the best chase in the Bond canon.

3. Christopher Walken (View to a Kill):
Poor movie, but one of the best baddies. You really believe this guy is dangerously crazy.

4. Citron 2CV (For Your Eyes Only):
Bond in a cool car will always succeed, but in a 2CV? Very funny indeed.

5. Nobody Does it Better (The Spy Who Loved Me):
It was a close run between this and Duran Duran for best opening song, but this has the classic edge.

6. Jaws’ teeth (Spy Who Loved Me / Moonraker):
This is the sort of gimmick that truly sums up the Roger Moore camp Bond era. And then Jaws falls in love! Could you imagine this in Bond now?

7. Cello Case (Living Daylights):
Becomes a handy sledge for a down hill getaway. Love the ‘Nothing to declare!” line as they cross the border.

8. Oil tanker secret submarine base (The Spy Who Loved Me):
The neatest of the mad-millionaire-who-wants-to-take-over-the-world hideouts, so good it was practically revisited with the stealth ship in Tomorrow Never Dies.

9. Rosamund Pike (Die Another Day):
By far the most most beautiful of the Bad Bond girls - well, certainly less scary than Grace Jones.

10. The title (Octopussy):
Just hilarious in that school boy snigger-snigger sort of way. Could easily have been an Austin Powers film...
