Hello Ishtar, You're More Than A Country...

I still wish that some day soon posterity will do the right thing by Elaine May's Ishtar, which suffered an evil fate back in 1987 when audiences preferred to line up for Eddie Murphy and Brigitte Nielson in Beverly Hills Cop 2, and critics stood by to let this injustice stand. There's still no region 1 or 2 DVD of Ishtar, as far as I know. My Ten Bad Dates list 'Don’t Believe The Gripes – Ten So-Called ‘Turkeys’ That Are Actually Terrific' reiterates the case for May's movie, but better yet is the following Q&A between May and her ex-partner Mike Nichols, which happened after a 2006 screening of Ishtar in New York sponsored by Film Comment magazine. Even if you're unfamiliar with the legendary double-act these two used to make, you'll get a kick from the undying keenness of their matched wits.
